What Is SEO? A Plain Guide for Small Business Owners
SEO stands for search engine optimization. It is the work that helps Google and Bing understand your website and show it when people search, so you get visitors without paying for each click. Good SEO makes your pages easy to find, easy to understand and worth showing. If you would rather have us do it, see our WordPress SEO.
Do you ever search for what you sell and find everyone but you? You are not alone, and it is usually fixable.
We have done SEO on hundreds of sites, from local service businesses to online stores. Here is what SEO is in plain words, how long it takes, what it costs and how to tell if it is worth it for you.
What does SEO stand for?
SEO means search engine optimization. Search results have two parts: ads that businesses pay for, and the regular results below them. SEO is about the regular results, often called organic results. You do not pay Google or Bing when someone clicks them.
The paid side is called PPC, or pay-per-click. You can read more in what is PPC. Many businesses run both, since ads work right away while SEO grows over time.
How does SEO work?
Google says its search works in three stages, and Bing works much the same way:
- Crawling. Programs called crawlers follow links around the web to find pages. Google says it finds most pages this way, not because someone submitted them.
- Indexing. The search engine reads each page and saves what it is about in a giant library, called the index.
- Ranking. When someone searches, the search engine picks the most helpful pages from the index and puts them in order.
Neither one shares its full formula, but both tell you what matters. Google’s own guide says SEO is about “helping search engines understand your content, and helping users find your site.” Bing’s guidelines say it looks at how well a page matches the search, how clear and trusted the site is, and how fresh the page is. It also looks at the searcher’s location and language.
What are the types of SEO?
There are four main types of SEO: on-page, off-page, technical and local.
| Type | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| On-page SEO | The words and setup on each page | A clear title, headings that answer questions, alt text on images |
| Off-page SEO | What other sites say about you | Links from local news, partners or industry sites, plus reviews |
| Technical SEO | How easily search engines can crawl and load your site | Speed, a sitemap, no broken links, pages that work on a phone |
| Local SEO | Showing up in maps and “near me” searches | Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business listings |
Most small businesses need a bit of all four. If you serve one town, local SEO usually pays off first.
What does SEO not do?
- No one can promise you the #1 spot. Google says there are no secrets that will “automatically rank your site first,” and Bing says the same about guarantees.
- Meta keywords do nothing on Google. Google says its search “doesn’t use the keywords meta tag.”
- Repeating a keyword over and over hurts. Google calls it keyword stuffing and says it is against its spam policies. There is no magic number of times to use a word.
- It is not a one-time job. Competitors keep working, and search engines prefer pages that stay up to date.
How long does SEO take?
Google says some changes show up in a few hours, while others take several months. It suggests waiting a few weeks before you judge whether a change worked.
In our work, most sites see movement in about three months, with bigger gains over six to twelve months. New sites and very competitive searches take longer. That is why we suggest giving monthly SEO at least three months before you decide.
Is SEO worth it?
For most businesses that customers search for, yes. A visitor from a regular search result costs you nothing for the click, and good rankings keep working while you sleep.
Here is a real example. One online store we work with grew from 19,706 search impressions a month in July 2025 to 106,040 in April 2026. Its clicks grew from 2,550 to 4,781 a month, and its average position moved from 12.7 to 6.4.
SEO is a harder fit when almost nobody searches for what you sell, or when you need sales this week. In those cases, ads or word of mouth may come first.
What about AI answers like ChatGPT?
More people now get answers from ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and Bing’s Copilot. These tools pull from pages on the web, so clear pages that answer questions well have a better shot at being used. Bing’s guidelines now even talk about pages being used as sources for AI answers.
The basics are the same: answer the question plainly, keep facts up to date and make your site easy to crawl. Our monthly SEO includes checking whether ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers mention you.
Can you do SEO yourself?
Yes, and the basics are free. Start here:
- Add your site to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. They show which searches bring people in and any problems found. Bing can import your site from Search Console in a few clicks.
- Claim your free listings on Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business, with the same name, address and phone on each.
- Give every page a clear title with what you do and where, in about 60 characters.
- Answer your customers’ real questions on your pages, in their words.
- Ask happy customers for reviews.
- Check your speed on a phone with Google’s PageSpeed Insights.
If you have tried these and still do not show up, a fresh set of eyes can find what is missing.
